Compare coverage and price together

A lower premium is useful only if you understand what comes with it. Compare quotes using the same drivers, vehicle details, coverage limits, and deductibles so you can see whether a price difference reflects savings or less protection.

Start with the distinction between damage you cause and damage to your own car. Liability helps pay for covered injuries or property damage you cause to others, while collision helps pay for crash damage to your vehicle. Comprehensive covers other losses, such as theft or weather damage. Collision and comprehensive are subject to the policy’s deductibles, limits, and exclusions. As the NAIC auto insurance shopping tool explains, a lender may require both if you finance your car.

Three examples: damage to another vehicle, collision with a bollard, and hail falling on a car.
  • Liability: Helps pay for covered injuries or property damage you cause to others.
  • Collision: Helps pay for covered crash damage to your vehicle.
  • Comprehensive: Helps pay for covered losses such as theft or weather damage to your vehicle.

Compare the coverages included in each quote. Deductibles, limits, and exclusions apply according to the policy.

Because these coverages serve different purposes, ask which ones a quote includes rather than relying on the phrase “full coverage.” As the NAIC explains, that phrase does not describe a standard policy that covers every loss. For more detail on individual coverages, visit our auto insurance guide.

What car insurance does Illinois require?

Illinois requires liability coverage and uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage at the minimum limits below. Uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage helps pay for injuries caused by an at-fault driver who has no liability insurance; it does not pay for damage to your car.

CoverageIllinois minimum limit
Bodily injury liability, per person$25,000
Bodily injury liability, per accident$50,000
Property damage liability, per accident$20,000
Uninsured motorist bodily injury$25,000 per person / $50,000 per accident

If the at-fault driver has liability insurance but its limits are too low, underinsured motorist bodily injury coverage may help pay eligible injury costs, subject to your UIM limits and policy terms. Illinois requires UIM when you buy uninsured motorist bodily injury limits above the state minimum. Protection for car damage is separate: uninsured motorist property damage coverage is optional. See the Illinois Department of Insurance shopping guide for details.

The liability minimums are often written as 25/50/20: $25,000 for bodily injury to one person, $50,000 for bodily injury per accident, and $20,000 for property damage per accident. Each is a separate limit, rather than one combined amount available for any loss.

Meeting these minimums does not mean a policy will cover every cost after an accident. Ask an agent to show you a higher-limit option alongside the minimum so you can judge the added protection against the price difference.

How to shop for affordable car insurance in Illinois

The NAIC auto insurance shopping tool explains how your vehicle, driving record, location, vehicle use, and coverage choices influence your quote. Because those details differ from one driver to the next, another driver’s premium may not tell you much about your own options. Comparing available carriers using your details gives you a more useful starting point.

One choice that affects both the premium and your potential out-of-pocket cost is the deductible: the portion of a covered loss you pay when a deductible applies. A higher deductible may lower the premium, but it also leaves you paying more after a covered loss. Ask to see the price at different deductibles and consider what you could afford to pay if you needed to make a claim. The Illinois Department of Insurance shopping guide explains this trade-off.

Before choosing a payment option, ask:

  • How much is due to start the policy?
  • What are the later payment amounts and due dates?
  • What is the total cost for the policy term, including any fees?

If the amount due today is your main concern, let the agent know so you can explore available payment options with the full schedule in view. Ready to compare? Call Magnum at 1-888-539-2102 during published hours to review coverage and payment choices together.

Get ready for an accurate quote

A few details can make the quote conversation easier. Gather what you have from this checklist; it is a preparation aid, not a list of documents required to begin every quote:

Driver organizing papers, a calendar and a car key before requesting an auto insurance quote.
  • Your vehicle’s year, make, and model, plus the VIN if available
  • Information about the drivers who will use the car
  • Where the car is kept and how it is used
  • Your current policy or declarations page, if available
  • The date you would like coverage to start

Your current policy can help you point out limits you want to keep and questions you want answered. If you do not have one, an agent can walk you through the proposed coverage. Either way, explain any delivery, rideshare, or business use before choosing a policy, since personal auto insurance may not cover those activities. Confirm details you are unsure about rather than guessing.

Once you have a quote, review the application details, coverage, amount due, and proposed start date before deciding. A quote is an estimate, not active insurance, so ask what still needs to happen for the policy to be issued.

Can I get coverage and proof the same day?

Magnum can offer same-day coverage when application, payment, underwriting, carrier, and policy issuance requirements are completed. Once the policy is issued, you can also receive an insurance ID card the same day.

If you need proof today, mention that at the start of the conversation. Before you finish, confirm that the policy has been issued and check its effective date and time, then ask how you will receive the ID card. Review the vehicle and policy details when it arrives.

Received an Illinois insurance verification notice?

An Illinois Insurance Verification System, or ILIVS, notice asks about coverage on a specific date, so start by checking the date and instructions on your notice. Buying a policy now does not establish that you were insured earlier. The Illinois Secretary of State insurance verification information explains the process.

Have the notice and the policy details for the date in question ready when you contact your agent. Magnum can help review the insurance information, but the state controls registration and reinstatement decisions, so do not assume that a new quote or ID card resolves the notice.

More questions before you choose

Can I get a quote if I have tickets, an accident, or a lapse in coverage?

Yes. Magnum shops options for drivers with tickets, accidents, or coverage lapses, as well as those with clean records. Share accurate details about your history so the quote reflects your situation. Eligibility and price depend on the carrier and your application, and acceptance is not guaranteed.

Can I pay cash at a Magnum store?

Yes, Magnum accepts cash payments in stores. Choose a store in our location directory, then confirm its hours and ask about the payment you need to make before visiting.

Where can I get help with an Illinois SR-22 requirement?

Our Illinois SR-22 insurance page explains this separate filing need. Have your notice available when you speak with an agent so you can discuss the filing requirement alongside your insurance needs.
